Electric car range anxiety is a strange thing. Before you start driving an EV, a range of less than 200 miles can sound hopelessly restrictive. You imagine constantly searching for chargers, crawling along motorways to preserve the battery and arriving everywhere later than planned.
Some of those things did happen when I drove nearly 600 miles in a BYD Dolphin Surf. However, the experience also proved something important: a short-range electric car is not unusable outside a city. You simply need to understand what it is designed to do.
The BYD Dolphin Surf is a compact electric car intended primarily for urban journeys, commuting and everyday local driving. It is not the obvious choice for someone covering hundreds of motorway miles every week. Despite that, I took one from Brighton to London, on to Norwich, across to the Cotswolds and finally back home to Brighton. By the time I returned it, I had covered 580 miles.
It was not always effortless. It required more planning than driving my usual longer-range EV, and there were moments when I wished the battery was considerably larger. But the car completed the journey, never left me stranded and taught me a lot about what living with a smaller electric car is really like.
The car: BYD Dolphin Surf Comfort
My test car was the BYD Dolphin Surf Comfort. The Dolphin Surf range includes Active, Boost and Comfort versions. The Boost offers the longest official range at up to 200 miles, while the more powerful Comfort model I drove has an official WLTP range of 193 miles.
Both the Boost and Comfort use a 43.2kWh BYD Blade Battery. The Comfort can also accept DC rapid charging at up to 85kW, allowing a 10% to 80% recharge in around 30 minutes under suitable conditions.
For comparison, my usual electric car has a range of approximately 340 miles. That gives me far more flexibility on long journeys and means I can normally travel at motorway speeds without giving efficiency too much thought. The Dolphin Surf required a different approach.
Can an electric car with a 193-mile range complete a 580-mile journey?
Yes, but I would not pretend it was as quick or convenient as doing the same journey in a long-range EV or a petrol car.
My route involved several very different types of charging:
- An 11kW on-street charger in London
- A 7kW destination charger in an underground car park
- A GRIDSERVE rapid-charging hub
- A Tesla charger open to non-Tesla vehicles
- A domestic three-pin plug
- Destination charging while stopping for lunch
This variety is fairly representative of what new electric car drivers will encounter. Not every charging session will involve plugging into an ultra-rapid charger at a gleaming motorway hub. Sometimes the best charger is simply the one located where you already plan to stop.
The first lesson: charge while you are doing something else
My first stop was in London after travelling approximately 60 miles from Brighton. I arrived with 58% battery remaining and plugged into an 11kW Source London charger while stopping for coffee and breakfast. After around 50 minutes, the battery had increased to 74%, adding roughly 30 miles of indicated range. That would sound disappointing if you had driven specifically to the charger and spent 50 minutes waiting beside the car. But I had not.
I needed breakfast anyway. The car was charging while I was eating, which meant the charging time had little effect on my day. This is one of the biggest adjustments when moving from petrol or diesel to electric. You stop thinking only in terms of filling a vehicle from empty to full. Instead, you take opportunities to add energy while shopping, working, eating, exercising or sleeping. Even a relatively slow charger can be useful when the car is going to be parked for an hour or two.
The frustrating reality of charging apps
Later that day, I arrived at an underground car park in Canary Wharf and found a 7kW charger. The charger required an app I had not previously used. Unfortunately, I was parked three floors underground with very little mobile signal.
I had to download the app, create an account, add my payment details and approve a banking authorisation before I could begin charging. The charger then placed a temporary £45 authorisation on my card. This was probably the most frustrating part of the trip.
It was not a problem with the BYD Dolphin Surf itself. It was a reminder that the public charging experience can still feel unnecessarily fragmented.
Once you have owned an electric car for a few weeks, downloaded the main apps and registered your payment details, this becomes far easier. The first few public charging sessions are often the most complicated because everything is unfamiliar.
More charging networks now offer contactless payment, but it is still worth preparing before setting off.
The EV charging apps worth downloading
Two of the most useful services for UK electric car drivers are Zapmap and Octopus Electroverse.
Zapmap allows you to search for public chargers, filter them by connector, charging speed and network, check availability information and plan longer journeys. Its route-planning tools can suggest charging stops based on the car you are driving and the range available.
Octopus Electroverse combines access to a large number of charging networks through one app and charging card. You can add your vehicle, filter out incompatible chargers and use its route mapper to plan suitable stops. Registration is free, and the service currently provides access to more than 1.4 million chargers across Europe.
Before your first long electric journey, I would recommend:
- Downloading Zapmap and Octopus Electroverse.
- Adding your vehicle to both apps.
- Ordering an Electroverse charging card.
- Creating accounts with any networks you regularly use.
- Adding a payment card before leaving home.
- Checking whether your planned destination has charging available.
- Identifying a backup charger near each planned stop.
Google Maps is also useful for finding chargers along a route, particularly because most drivers are already familiar with it. However, a dedicated EV charging app usually provides more detailed information about connectors, charging speeds, prices and availability.
Driving from London to Norwich
After a few hours of destination charging in Canary Wharf, I began the journey towards Norwich with 80% battery and an indicated range of 155 miles.
The journey was approximately 131 miles, so on paper the car could complete it without stopping. However, there was nowhere to charge at my final destination. I therefore planned a stop at a GRIDSERVE charging hub near Norwich, ensuring I would have enough energy for the following day.
I drove conservatively, using Eco mode and setting the cruise control at around 55mph.
The range prediction remained impressively accurate. I reached the charging station with 18% battery remaining and connected to a rapid charger delivering approximately 60kW. After half an hour, the battery had reached 87%, providing an indicated 169 miles of range. This was the easiest charging stop of the entire trip. I plugged in, went upstairs, bought a coffee, used the facilities and stretched my legs.
There is no denying that a petrol car could have been refuelled in less than five minutes. But after several hours of driving, a 30-minute break was hardly unreasonable.
Does driving more slowly improve electric car range?
Yes, considerably. Electric cars tend to be particularly efficient around towns, where lower speeds and regenerative braking help conserve energy. Sustained high-speed motorway driving demands far more power.
In my normal long-range EV, I would usually set the cruise control at 70mph. In the Dolphin Surf, I often travelled at between 50mph and 55mph to protect the remaining range. That worked, but it also made some journeys noticeably longer. This is where the limits of a short-range EV become clear. It can cover long distances, but doing so regularly may involve compromising your speed, stopping more often or both.
On one section of the journey, I left a charger believing I had just over 20 miles of spare range. As the journey continued, the margin began to fall more quickly than expected. With 38 miles remaining, the car displayed only 48 miles of range. I slowed to 50mph and eventually arrived with just 5% battery and eight miles showing. That was the point at which range anxiety genuinely appeared. The car made it, but I had allowed too little margin.
What is EV range anxiety?
Range anxiety is the fear that an electric car will run out of charge before reaching a suitable charger. The easiest way to reduce it is not necessarily to buy the EV with the largest possible battery. It is to become familiar with how electric cars behave.
You learn:
- How motorway speeds affect consumption
- How cold or wet weather changes the available range
- How much energy your regular journeys use
- Where reliable chargers are located
- How much battery you feel comfortable arriving with
- When a brief top-up is more sensible than pushing onwards
I now know that leaving myself only 20 miles of predicted spare range in a small EV is not enough for a relaxed motorway journey. Traffic, diversions, weather, elevation changes and driving speed can all affect consumption. A 10-minute charging stop would have removed most of the stress and probably made little difference to my overall arrival time.
Charging from a three-pin plug
At my overnight stop, the Dolphin Surf was connected to a domestic three-pin socket for approximately 13 hours. This increased the battery to 82%, giving me an indicated 158 miles the following morning. Three-pin charging is slow and should only be used with appropriate equipment and a safe, professionally checked socket. However, it demonstrated that even a basic overnight connection can add a meaningful amount of range to a small-battery EV.
A proper 7kW home charger would be significantly quicker and could comfortably replenish a Dolphin Surf overnight. For most drivers, this is what electric car ownership actually looks like. You arrive home, plug the car in and wake up with the battery ready for the next day.
You do not begin every morning searching for a public rapid charger.
The UK charging network is much bigger than many people realise
At the time of my original journey, I mentioned that the UK had more than 100,000 public charging devices. The network has continued growing. Zapmap recorded 121,171 public EV charging devices across the UK at the end of June 2026, following the installation of more than 5,100 additional chargers during the first half of the year.
That does not mean every part of the country has equally good coverage, nor does it guarantee that every charger will always be available. However, it does mean that running out of charge should be avoidable with sensible planning.
The best advice is to plan around charging hubs or locations with several chargers rather than relying on one isolated unit. You should also keep a backup option in mind, particularly when travelling through rural areas.
How much did the 580-mile journey cost?
Across the full journey, I spent £62.36 on public and destination charging.
At the time, I compared this with the estimated fuel cost of completing the same journey in a similarly sized Toyota Aygo X. Using average fuel prices, the estimated petrol cost was £69.49. That comparison needs context.
This trip relied heavily on public charging, including relatively expensive rapid chargers. Public charging can cost substantially more per kilowatt-hour than charging at home. A driver using an off-peak home electricity tariff for most of their charging could complete the same mileage much more cheaply. This was effectively a stress test involving long motorway journeys in a city-focused EV. It was not representative of the way most Dolphin Surf owners would use the car.
Is the BYD Dolphin Surf suitable for long journeys?
It is capable of completing long journeys, but that does not necessarily mean it is the right car for someone who frequently covers them.
If you regularly drive 150 to 250 miles in a day, a longer-range electric car will be more convenient. It will allow you to travel at normal motorway speeds, make fewer charging stops and retain a more comfortable battery margin.
The Dolphin Surf makes far more sense for someone who:
- Mainly drives locally
- Has a predictable commute
- Can charge at home or work
- Only completes occasional long journeys
- Wants a compact and comfortable electric car
- Does not need a large boot or lots of rear space
For that type of driver, a range of approximately 200 miles can be more than enough.
If your average daily journey is 20 or 30 miles, you may only need to charge once or twice a week. On the rare occasion that you travel further, the public charging network makes it possible, provided you plan ahead.
What I learned from living with a short-range electric car
The most important lesson was that electric cars become easier to live with very quickly. During the first few charging stops, I was downloading apps, creating accounts and trying to understand unfamiliar chargers. By the end of the trip, the process already felt more natural.
I knew which apps to use. I understood how the car’s range changed at motorway speeds. I had learned to combine charging with meals and coffee stops. Most importantly, I knew not to leave such a small safety margin on longer journeys. This is what often gets lost in discussions about switching to electric.
You do not need to become an expert before collecting your first EV. You learn how it fits into your life over the first couple of weeks, much as you learn the quirks of any new car.
My verdict
The BYD Dolphin Surf would not be my first recommendation for someone who spends their life covering hundreds of motorway miles. It completed my 580-mile journey, but I sometimes had to drive more slowly than I wanted, plan several charging stops and accept longer journey times. A larger-battery EV would have handled the same route more easily. But judging the Dolphin Surf only by its suitability for a 580-mile road trip would miss the point.
This is a small, comfortable and capable electric car designed for everyday journeys. Used primarily around town, charged overnight and taken on occasional longer trips, it makes much more sense. It did not let me down. It was comfortable throughout the journey, its predicted range was generally dependable and its compact dimensions made it easy to use in London and other busy locations. The trip did not prove that everyone should buy a short-range EV. It proved that you probably need less range than you think.
Choose a car that suits the journeys you complete regularly, rather than the longest journey you might make once a year. Download the main charging apps, plan your first few longer trips carefully and leave yourself a sensible battery buffer. After a couple of weeks, it all starts to feel surprisingly normal.
