Volvo is bringing Apple Music to more than two million cars through an over-the-air software update, giving drivers another way to enjoy music directly through the car’s infotainment system.
It is one of those updates that might not sound huge at first, but it is exactly the sort of feature that makes a car feel more modern, more personal and easier to live with.
For many of us, music is a big part of driving. Whether it is a morning commute, a long motorway run, a weekend drive or just a quick trip across town, the right playlist can completely change the feel of a journey.
As a Tesla driver, this is something I really appreciate. Having apps built directly into the car creates a much more seamless experience. I do use Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in other cars, and they are both brilliant, but there is something cleaner about getting in, signing into the car itself and having everything ready to go without plugging in or relying on phone mirroring.
That is why I think this is a smart update from Volvo. It gives drivers more choice.
Volvo has offered Spotify integration for years, and many newer models already make it easy to access apps through their Google-based infotainment system. Now Apple Music users are getting a more seamless experience too.
Phone mirroring is great, but built-in apps make the whole experience feel more polished. You can sign in, use the touchscreen or voice controls, and access your music directly through the car.
It is another sign of how much technology now shapes the ownership experience. Cars are no longer just about engines, batteries, boot space and trim levels. The infotainment system, app support, sound quality and software updates are becoming a much bigger part of how a car feels day to day.
Which Volvo models are getting Apple Music?
The Apple Music software update is being rolled out to selected Volvo models from model year 2020 onwards.
This includes the Volvo EX90, ES90, XC90, S90, V90, XC60, S60, V60, XC40, EX40 and EC40. The new Volvo EX60 will also come with Apple Music built in when the first customer cars arrive.
Eligible Volvo customers who are new or returning Apple Music subscribers can also get up to three months free through the Volvo Cars app, with the offer valid until 6 July 2027.
Spatial Audio adds a more premium touch
For drivers of the Volvo EX60, EX90 and ES90, there is another extra benefit. These models can also support Apple Music Spatial Audio, powered by Dolby Atmos.
When paired with the optional Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system, Volvo says this creates a more immersive listening experience, with music and vocals surrounding the cabin rather than just coming from individual speakers.
That feels very on-brand for Volvo. The company has always been good at creating calm, comfortable interiors, so improving the in-car sound experience makes a lot of sense.
A quiet cabin, a good sound system and proper built-in streaming could make these newer Volvos feel like very relaxing places to spend time.
A small update that says a lot about modern cars
This is not the sort of feature that will make someone buy a Volvo on its own, but it does add to the overall appeal.
More importantly, it shows how cars are becoming software-led products. A vehicle can now gain new features after it has already been built, simply through an over-the-air update.
That is good news for owners, because it means the car does not have to feel frozen in time from the day it leaves the showroom.
For me, the best thing about this Apple Music update is the choice it gives drivers. Spotify users have had strong in-car support from Volvo for years, and now Apple Music users get a more integrated experience too.
It is a small but smart move, and exactly the kind of tech update that makes everyday driving feel just that bit better.
