The Fiat Topolino is now officially available to order in the UK, with prices starting from £8,995 on-the-road.
Now, before anyone gets too excited, this is not a normal electric car. It is an all-electric quadricycle, which means it sits in that unusual little space between a car, a scooter and something you might expect to see buzzing around a stylish Italian seaside town.
But that is exactly why I like it.
I got to see the Fiat Topolino earlier this year at a Fiat event for the launch of the new Grande Panda. Among all the usual launch-day excitement, the Topolino really stood out. I had a proper look around it, sat inside it, and honestly, I thought it was super cute. It is funky, cheerful and full of character in a way that so many modern cars simply are not.
Would I want one as my only car in the UK? Absolutely not.
Would I quite enjoy nipping down the road in one on a sunny day? Weirdly, yes.
What is the Fiat Topolino?
The Fiat Topolino is a tiny electric quadricycle designed for short trips, urban journeys and low-speed environments.
Think of it as Fiat’s take on the Citroen Ami formula. In fact, it is essentially closely related to the Citroen Ami, which I have seen a couple of times out on UK roads, although they are still a pretty rare sight.
The Topolino takes that same idea and gives it a much more Fiat-style personality. It looks softer, more retro and, dare I say it, a bit more desirable. There is a little bit of Italian holiday energy about it. It is the kind of thing you can imagine parked outside a beach café, not necessarily battling through a wet Tuesday morning commute on the A27.
Fiat Topolino price and range
The Topolino starts from £8,995 on-the-road in the UK.
For that, you get a 5.5kWh battery, a 6kW electric motor and a claimed range of up to 46 miles. Top speed is 28mph, so this is very much designed for local journeys rather than big adventures.
There is a simple automatic-style drive selector with Drive, Neutral and Reverse, so it should be very easy to use. Charging is also kept simple, with an integral charging cable and a UK Type 2 adaptor.
In other words, this is not trying to be a mini Tesla. It is not pretending to be a long-distance EV. It is a tiny electric runaround with a very specific purpose.
Is the Fiat Topolino practical?
This is where I think you need to be honest about what the Topolino is and what it is not.
For central London, Brighton seafront, private estates, holiday parks, campuses, small towns or very short local hops, I can see the appeal. It is tiny, electric, easy to park and has more weather protection than a scooter.
But for normal UK roads day to day, I do think it has limitations.
A 28mph top speed means you will need to think carefully about where you use it. It is not something I would want to take on faster roads, and it is not allowed on motorways. Even around town, there will be moments where you are very aware that traffic around you is moving much quicker.
That does not make it pointless. It just means it is not a replacement for a proper car for most people.
What is it like inside?
When I sat in the Topolino, it felt exactly as you would expect: tiny, simple and quite charming.
Fiat says it has space for two people thanks to offset front seats, and there is up to 63 litres of storage. There is also a little dashboard storage box called the Dolce Vita Box, which feels very on-brand.
Do not expect luxury. Do not expect a big infotainment system, plush seats or loads of tech. That is not the point.
The Topolino is more about simplicity. It is about making short electric journeys feel fun, easy and slightly ridiculous in the best way.
The Topolino name has history
The name Topolino means “little mouse” in Italian, and it is not new for Fiat.
The original Fiat 500 Topolino was produced between 1936 and 1955, becoming one of those small, characterful cars that helped define Fiat’s reputation for affordable, compact motoring.
Bringing the name back for a tiny electric quadricycle makes sense. It is cute, compact and designed to make mobility feel accessible again.
Would I buy one?
I am torn.
As an object, I love it. It made me smile when I saw it in person, and that counts for a lot. So many modern cars are big, serious and trying very hard to look aggressive. The Topolino is the opposite. It is friendly. It is silly. It has charm.
But as something to actually live with in the UK, I would need the right use case.
If you live in a busy city, only do short journeys, have somewhere easy to charge it and do not need to use faster roads, it could make sense. It could also be brilliant for leisure use, holiday sites or private land.
For me personally, it is more of a fun extra than a proper everyday vehicle.
But I am glad it exists. The car world needs more things like this. Not everything has to be huge, fast, expensive or overcomplicated. Sometimes a tiny electric Fiat with a 28mph top speed and a face like a happy little cartoon car is exactly the kind of weirdness we need.
