2024 Film Reviews

As a self-confessed movie lover, I’ve always made time to catch the latest films, but 2024 has been a bit different for me. With my fitness journey well underway, I’ve found myself out and about more often, enjoying the lighter evenings or clocking in some gym time rather than snuggling up on the sofa to watch a film.

That said, I’ve still managed to watch my fair share of movies and explored a couple of great cinemas such as the Everyman in Horsham and the Electric Cinema in London, where you get luxurious and comfortable seating and food and drinks brought to your seat which completely elevate the movie watching experience.

I couldn’t resist sharing my thoughts on some of the highlights (and lowlights) of the year. So, here’s my honest take on the films I’ve caught so far—some amazing, some not so much, and a couple that left me scratching my head!

Heretic

What a fascinating film this turned out to be! The story had just the right amount of intrigue to keep me hooked, and Hugh Grant was absolutely brilliant. He nailed the role with that trademark mix of charm and wit, giving the film a personality I really enjoyed. Other reviewers have praised his performance too, and I couldn’t agree more—it’s one of his standout roles in recent years. A solid film that I’d happily rewatch when I’m in the mood for something thought-provoking yet entertaining.

Paddington in Peru

If there’s one film this year that made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside, it’s this one. Paddington in Peru is just pure magic. It’s funny, charming, and heartwarming in all the ways you’d expect from our favourite marmalade-loving bear. I loved every minute of it! The glowing reviews from critics and audiences alike are spot on—this film is an absolute delight from start to finish. If you haven’t seen it yet, drop everything and go.

Smile 2

I wasn’t sure how Smile 2 would follow the original’s creepy, psychological brilliance, but it did a pretty decent job. It wraps up the story nicely and brings just enough scares to keep you on edge. That said, it didn’t quite capture the magic of the first film—it’s hard to top that initial sense of shock and suspense. Still, it’s a solid sequel that delivers where it matters.

Emilia Pérez

This one wasn’t quite what I expected. I went in thinking it would be a gritty action-packed drama, but instead, I got a full-on musical—all in Spanish! I can appreciate the creativity, but I have to admit, it wasn’t for me. The constant singing felt overwhelming, and I was left wanting more action. Some critics have called it a bold and artistic choice, but I found myself checking the time more than once.

Wolfs

This was right up my street! Wolfs is a brilliantly intense and gripping film that had me hooked from the very start. The storytelling is layered and engaging, and the performances are top-notch. It’s no wonder critics are raving about it—it’s easily one of my favourites of the year. If you love a film that keeps you on the edge of your seat, this one’s for you.

Joker: Folie à Deux

I wanted to love this. I really did. After how incredible the first Joker film was, my expectations were sky-high. Unfortunately, this sequel just didn’t work for me. The constant singing felt out of place and dragged the whole thing down. While I can see what they were trying to do with the musical elements, it just wasn’t for me. Some people might call it bold, but I’d call it boring.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

This was a fun blast from the past! Beetlejuice Beetlejuice perfectly captures the quirky vibe of the original while bringing in enough fresh ideas to feel new. It’s dark, funny, and visually stunning—a real treat for fans of the original film. It’s not quite as iconic as the first, but it’s still a great watch.

Deadpool & Wolverine

I had high hopes for this one—Deadpool and Wolverine on the same screen? Yes, please! While there are definitely some laugh-out-loud moments, the film felt a bit slow at times. Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s chemistry is great, as always, but the storyline didn’t quite hit the heights I was expecting. That said, it’s still worth a watch for the humour alone.

Despicable Me 4

The Despicable Me series can do no wrong in my eyes. Despicable Me 4 is every bit as funny and charming as its predecessors. The Minions are as mischievous as ever, and the storyline had me laughing out loud. It’s just good, wholesome fun, and I loved every minute of it.

The Beekeeper

Now this was a proper action film! Jason Statham delivers everything you’d want—big stunts, loads of action, and just enough story to keep you invested. It’s classic Statham in the best way possible. Critics have been calling it a return to form for him, and I completely agree. If you love action-packed thrillers, this one’s a no-brainer.

Red, White & Royal Blue

I can’t stop smiling every time I think about this film. Red, White & Royal Blue is the sweetest, most heartwarming love story I’ve seen in ages. It’s romantic without being cheesy and left me hoping for a sequel. If you’re in the mood for something light and uplifting, this is the perfect choice.

The Idea of You

This one really surprised me. The Idea of You is such a lovely, emotional film. It’s beautifully shot and tells a story that feels so real and relatable. I’ve seen some great reviews for it, and they’re absolutely deserved. It’s a film that leaves you thinking about it long after it’s finished.

Ricky Stanicky

Sometimes you just need a fun, easy comedy, and Ricky Stanicky fits the bill perfectly. It’s silly, laugh-out-loud funny, and doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s the kind of film you can throw on after a long day and just enjoy without overthinking.

While I haven’t spent as much time in front of the TV or at the cinema this year, the films I have seen have been a real mixed bag. Some were instant favourites, others not so much, but that’s all part of the fun of being a movie lover. What have you been watching this year? Let me know if there are any gems I’ve missed—I’m always on the lookout for my next favourite!
